Puerto Maldonado is located where the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers meet. It is an area of outstanding and unspoilt virgin jungle, near three superb jungle reserves, the Manu National Park, the Tambopata Wildlife Reserve and the Rio Heath Pampas Sanctuary. As you would expect, the wildlife here – both plant and animal – is of exceptional interest. The number of bird and butterfly species is probably world records. Accommodation is in simple, comfortable jungle lodges.
Altitude: 140 metres/460 feet above sea level Population: 31,000 approx. Climate: Hot and humid with frequent rain between December to March.
We have selected three lodges in the area, which in our opinion each give visitors a different insight to explore the jungle.
