AQP 301 Thermal Baths at Jesus and the Salinas Lake
Private Services only Along the road to Puno and on the slopes of the Pichu-Pichu Volcano we reach Jesus, one of the several thermal baths surrounding Arequipa. Visit the church of Chiquiata, which dates from the 18th century. The trip's final destination is the Salinas lake, where we see hundreds of flamingos which have made the lake, at 3,800 metres/12,540 feet, their home. Llamas, alpacas and even vicuña can be sighted. Picnic-box included. Return to Arequipa in the afternoon.
AQP 302 Toro Muerto petroglyphs
Private Services only
The Toro Muerto Petroglyphs lie west of Arequipa. Your car or bus takes you down the Pan American Highway almost to the coast, where the road turns northwards. Near the village of Corire lies this enormous plain, with thousands of stones covered with petroglyphs representing human figures, animals and hunting scenes. Walk up the plain to appreciate the stones and possibility of picnic box or lunch at a simple restaurant in Punta Colorada (possibility of eating the very special river-shrimp, which are famous in the department of Arequipa, except between January and April, when it is prohibited to catch them). Return to Arequipa in the afternoon.
