Llama Trekking in the Huascaran National National Park (3 Days / 2 Nights)

The main goal of this circuit is to reaffirm community-based tourism and to promote a trek with the co-operation of an Indian community in the Huascarán National Park. They have organised and implemented this circuit to revive the tradition of packing with llamas. Departing from the village of Olleros (3,450 M) the visitor travels through 37 Km of this National Park on a three day hike, accompanied by llamas. The distances of the hikes are between 10 and 14 Km per day and take about 5 to 6 hours each time. Following a pre-Inca migration route, crossing the White Cordillera, the trek ends at the enigmatic archaeological site of Chavin de Huantar (3,180 m), an Andean sanctuary considered the origin of Peruvian cultures.
Departures every Friday, minimum 2 passengers.

Day 1 Friday
Early departure from Huaraz by bus or car as far as Olleros (25 Km). Olleros style breakfast and beginning of hike, passing through the villages of Aqocancha, Kiswar till Tsakracancha at 4,150 m / 13,695 ft. Lunch on the way. Accommodation at campsite, dinner with guitar music played by people from the village.

Day 2 Saturday
Breakfast. Hike to Tuctupampa, Yanashallash (4,700 m / 15,510 ft, highest point) and down to the Shongo Valley. Lunch en route. Accommodation at campsite. Pachamanca dinner (food is cooked in a hole, lined with heated stones) and Andean Feast. Accommodation at campsite.

Day 3 Sunday
Breakfast. Hike to the villages of Shongopampa and Chichucancha, with visits to local artisans' workshops and finally arrival in Chavin de Huantar. Visit to the ruins, lunch and return by bus or car to Huaraz in the afternoon (4 hours). Arrival and dinner in Huaraz with local dances.
